BMW announced it will introduce a new, more powerful 1-Series model, and an "M Sport" cosmetics package for its 3 and 5 Series and X3 models. The 130i gets BMW's 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, which has been tweaked to get 258hp, more than the 330i, 530i and 630i — in fact, only the M3 has a more powerful six. Torque has been redefined upward by 11 clicks, to 232ft/lbs. From a stop, 60mph comes on in 6.1 seconds, and the speed nanny confiscates the milk and cookies at 155mph. Active Steering, which adjusts turning ratio based on speed, is available as an option. The 130i will launch (sorry, Tennessee) in Europe this September.

The M Sport package (a poor use of the M brand, no?) incudes a lower front spoiler styled for increased aerodynamics, sculpted side sills. bespoke 17- or 18-inch double-spoke alloy wheels, tuned suspension and high-gloss paint, along with interior enhancements, in the seating, headlining and steering areas.
