Thor Batista, the son of Brazilian billionaire Eike Batista, will face charges of manslaughter without intent after he hit and killed a bicyclist driving his Mercedes-McLaren SLR last Saturday evening.

The accident happened north of Rio de Janeiro around 7 PM. The victim has been identified as thirty-year-old Wanderson Pereira dos Santos, who was riding home from work. Few other details about the incident have emerged, including what speeds may have been involved, but Thor claimed he was traveling at the 110KPH speed limit and passed a breathalyzer test at the scene — after nearly becoming physically ill when he stopped and saw what had happened.

The Batista family has paid the funeral expenses for Pereira.

1. He wasn't drinking

2. He was doing the speed limit

3. He stuck around and got out of the car

Sometimes accidents, real accidents, do happen. Maybe the cyclist swerved...

I always side with the cyclist (I'm a daily bike-commuter) but in this case, I have a feeling that is just "sometimes, bad things happen."
