Automobile's Matthew Phenix, with his "baseball meets relay race" analogy, finally set a picture in our minds of how VW's direct-shift gearbox (DSG) makes those F1-class shift times. But is the technology wasted in a diesel bug, two words that connote "slow" with the equivalent precision of, say, "molasses sloth"? We'd guess yes, but we'd be partly wrong.
