We went to St Maarten for our honeymoon 2 months ago. The place we stayed was right next to the beach end of the runway, so we saw planes from our room and from the beach all week long. Best part was being at the end of the runway for a 747 taking off.
Been there. Seen that. Swam with a pelican. Got the t-shirt.
I was working ground control one day (FAA ATC tower), it was slow. I was looking up in the sky and noticed an overflight aircraft way up there. Space shuttle launches were over a billion each, the $450M didn’t include the overhead of management/operations. It was dramatically more expensive than the Saturn V and significantly less capable. We could have easily funded Manned Mars missions using enhanced Saturn Vs with the money wasted on the Shuttle. Read more
