I’ve got this on my DROOOOOOOL list. One day I’ll have it.

I think the props just needed a bit of torque to get it started, like in the older prop planes of the day. Once you get the props moving, the engine kicks in and starts moving on its own. Read more

Excellent write up... I have two little bits of input Read more

Took me a second to realize there was an Eagle and a Fulcrum in the pictures. Maybe because I always found the Fishbed so fascinating as a kid.

We had a KD named Mongo, well nickname anyway. I also remember one at prototype that had a Mighty Mouse tattoo and used to yell, “Here I come to save the day!” during drills. Read more

Patrol Sock - when out at sea (on patrol) it’s a sock meant to catch your jizz. Read more

Going by my dad’s lexicon, “check valve” and “make a hole” have some overlap with the Marine Corps, too. Read more

On my ship the midnight to four watch rotation was called the midwatch, and was the most desirable rotation. The watches were four hour shifts unless a personnel shortage mandated six on six off. Midwatches got to sleep till noon and had to fake being busy working for just the afternoon.

Don’t worry, Jonsey. You’ll have your moment one day.

Also, we seem to be missing “Flopper”. This was the individual done up with some wound or other, sucking chest wound, amputated arm, etc. The “Flopper’s” duty required him to come running into the mess hall, usually screaming bloody murder if he was fun, and “flop” around like a fish out of water. Which, honestly, is Read more

Thank you, I love these posts! I may never make it onto a submarine, but at least I can use the lingo.

Good list. George though, does mean something. It’s spelled here how the name is spelled, but comes from “Junior Officer Requiring Guidance” = JORG and pronounced George. The George typically (at least in the SWO community) is made to wear Red and Green Port and Starboard Ensign bars so that everyone knows exactly who Read more

IDK about weird. I’d say “a little squirrelly”. I’ve known several. They’re smart, focused, pay attention to detail, good judgement. I think they’re good people in general, but after a while, they’re just different and seem distracted - in life, at sea or not. It changes them. They’re under pressure consistently with Read more

Great compilation, Tyler. Can we get a “Confessions of...” from a submarine guy? Or expand Foxtrot to include some tech specs of submarines? That would be quite interesting... Read more

XO has to put up with so much shit that they either have a good attitude about it or are the most hated officer on the ship. I have heard some stories about the XO being a pure dick and treating “problem” crews like trash. I think the USS Cushing (DD-985) had a real special air to it that gave us some good XO’s. I Read more

SNOB: Shortest Nuke on Board: This is the nick name given to the next nuclear trained person on the boat to leave the Navy. There is a formal SNOB turnover at a bar of the individuals’ choice. Read more

My Dad served on a sub for 8 years. He has crazy stories to tell. He was under the Atlantic when the USS Thresher went down. Also during the Bay of Pigs. I have some serious respect for Submariners. Those guys are 500 feet below the ocean’s surface loaded to the brim with explosives (traditional and nuclear) powered Read more
