I’m not a great mechanic by any stretch, but my Dad taught me to go slow and be careful. If a bolt isn’t threading in nicely with my fingers I back it out, clean the threads with a wire brush, have a really good look at everything then try again.

A friend actually cracked an alloy wheel in Death Valley, and I know people that have done so in the brutal pot holes and broken pavement in Africa.
The paved roads are often 100 times worse than the unpaved ones - the pot holes are intense.
