CalTrans officials have egg on their faces after admitting that their FasTrak automatic toll-payment system has intermittently charging drivers of automobiles a $12.50 toll the going rate for a seven-axle semi truck. The problem? Simple cleaning. The glass protecting the system's bank of lasers known as a "light curtain" gets dirty and the weight sensing treadle in the pavement simply racks up the axle count, as the lasers can no longer differentiate between vehicles. Hey, Bob, could you pass the CalTrans kids the Hollandaise sauce? Thanks, we can't reach from here.
