A Brotastic Moment in Motor Racing

Did you just win a Grand Prix and witness your rival run out of fuel? Since Formula One cars come with aerodynamic sidepods, it’s easy to do the decent and brotherly thing: drive up and give a lift.

The liftee in the blue and yellow Williams is Nigell Mansell, who won the 1991 British Grand Prix while an attack in the closing laps by Ayrton Senna saw his McLaren run out of fuel a few corners before crossing the line for second place. On his victory lap, Mansell stopped by Senna and his stricken McLaren, Senna clambered onto the Williams’s sidepod, grabbed the airbox, and the two drove off to the pits. At pretty high speed for a man sitting on a slippery pod of carbon fiber.
