AMG's new, 5.5-liter bi-turbocharged V8 impressed us in the CLS63, even if it didn't snarl like the old 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated blaster. Today, the turbo trickled into the midfield, showing up in the E-Class. Better mileage, too, for more greenness.
Details on the new juiced E-Class arrived today, wrapped in Euro paper, ahead of the car's US launch at the New York auto show this week. The turbo eight, plus the AMG Performance Package, boosts the E-Class's power peak to 549 hp. Without the package, the 5.5 produces the same as the old 6.2— 518 hp. How does that translate into street performance? Hold your damn horses.
Euro specs spot the new E63 at 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds, and the optional AMG Driver's Package defeats the 155 mph limiter, pushing top speed to 186 mph.
We'll know more about the US-spec E63 when Mercedes-Benz makes with the news in NYC later this week.
