1979 Holden Commodore—This Is It

With this past week's news GM is bringing a version of the Australian Holden Commodore to American shores—again—we thought it appropriate to take a look at another slightly less exciting version of the Commodore.

For the wagon buyer who wanted more in 1979 the Holden Commodore wagon was it. It was new kind of wagon with luxury, compact size and handling characteristics that could only be described (by Holden) as "a revelation".

As regular weekend readers are well aware, we watch a lot of vintage car commercials, but this one stands alone in one regard. The worst music ever featured in a vintage advertisement? This is it.

I actually saw one of these today, an Opel Senator. Which has the same front end as the Commodore. It was part of a haphazard classic car show, and was parked next to a 1922 Renault and a 1930-ish Pierce-Arrow. There was absolutely nothing compact about this Opel though, quite the contrary. Especially compared to its contemporaries.
