In 1972, the French unveiled what they claimed was the sum total of all collected automotive knowledge up to that point: The Renault 12. After all, Renault (curiously pronounced Ren-ALT by the announcer here) has been making cars since 1899. Clearly, they can do a better job than anyone else!

Time, you see, has taught Ren-ALT that front-wheel-drive is vastly superior for handling and traction. And through their decades of automotive mastery, Ren-ALT has learned how to make a car with 30 mpg "without looking it or feeling it." Whatever the hell that means.

The ad closes with the claim that Ren-ALT is the world's largest maker of FWD cars. I think we can all agree that today, that's not really something to be proud of.
