Nobody likes a cookie-cutter car, especially not if you’re reading this (now green) website. You’re into the weird stuff. Stuff that doesn’t fit the mold. Stuff that sits outside of the realm of normal cars. That’s what led us to this question.

We asked you to tell us what cars on sale today are the weirdest, and you all really delivered. However, I was a bit surprised. Some of you seem to have mistaken “weird” for “bad”, and that’s just not the case. You just misunderstood. Weird is good, my friends!

But, let’s look past the negativity. Some of you submitted some truly excellently-weird vehicles. Some of your comments even changed the way I perceived some cars. I honestly learned there are a lot more weird cars on sale today than I thought. That’s wonderful, isn’t it?

Anyway, why don’t we take a look at the cars some of you consider to be the weirdest on the market right now.

It is a constantly updated version of wildly outdated ideas sold to people who never use it for its stated purposes. Like commuting in a hydrogen filled dirigible.

Steampunk nonsense.

Calling a Wrangler “steampunk nonsense” is one of the funniest things anyone has ever said on this site. I still love the Wrangler, but I fear you are correct.

Building one of the best cars in the world, and keeping it almost completely isolated to a single market, for over 50 years? That’s wonderfully weird.

The Century is such a cool car, but I get why they’re only sold in Japan. -9 people would buy one in the U.S.

Weird because of who sells it. Who the fuck is buying these? Why on earth would BMW want this car to be sold with it’s badge on it? It has nothing to do with any BMW in history. FWD slow subcompact economy car? Get the fuck outa here.

While it’s not technically a car, the Polaris Slingshot “autocycle” always gets a second glace from me when I see one on the road. It looks to me like the illegitimate child of the Batmobile and Ariel Atom, especially in black. My kid, who is part of the generation that is typically only impressed with the Model X or Discovery or whatever popular influencers are at the moment are driving, the Slingshot actually got a thumbs up from them.

The Slingshot exists to support sketchy car rental businesses in Vegas, LA and Miami.

Only feasible place in the country to buy one is in California. There’s no hydrogen network anywhere afaik.

Hydrogen is such a cool idea in theory. Perhaps one day we will see the full fruit of what it can offer, but I don’t know if any of us will be alive when that happens.

Any production car selling over MSRP is weird. Any buyer paying above MSRP is weird and any dealership pretending that it’s not weird is also weird.

Hyundai Venue. Their marketers make them look decent in photos but they’re so oddly proportioned in real life, if they were more well known I would say they would be the next Element/Soul/Cube/XB dork car.

Holy shit. You’re right. The Venue is, for all intents and purposes, the modern day XB. Bless you, savethemanualsbmw335ix. You are so correct.

All CUVs

Image for article titled These Are the Weirdest Cars On Sale Today, According to You
Photo: Andy Kalmowitz / Jalopnik

Generally speaking, they get worse MPG than the sedans, coupes, and hatchbacks they replace. They often times only have about the same amount of usable space, and less if you actually want to see out of the back. They are more cramped, especially in the backseats due to the suspension required for that extra (useless) lift. They are not capable off-road. You can say they have better visibility since you sit higher - except when everyone has one, your extra height counts for not. They have worse handling and braking then cars, as they have more weight and a higher center of gravity. And they typically range from boring and unattractive to pretty freaking ugly.

This all makes them qualify as Weird, because why the hell are people buying something that is worse in every way than the cars they are replacing.

Listen brother, people like to have a little extra ride height. I wouldn’t buy one of these cars, but I get why people do.

Subaru BRZ

Subaru BRZ

Image for article titled These Are the Weirdest Cars On Sale Today, According to You
Photo: Subaru

Subaru built its reputation for quirky, often ugly, more often ugliest AWD “family” cars with odd things like weather radios and hood scoops on non-turbo cars. They have a “iconic” less expensive performance vehicle (WRX). The last Coupe they sold in the US market was a weak-optioned Imprza RS and prior to that the SVX and XT (turbos). All had AWD.

And then the Toyobaru thing happen. Nearly identical Subaru built to Toyota specs thing. Not bad, but where is the Subaru turbo, subaru AWD, subaru flannel vape cloud?

Strange

The BRZ is weird simply because a major OEM decided to actually spend money on a sports car. It’s the best kind of weird — the kind that doesn’t make that much financial sense.

Hyundai Kona N is one that comes to mind for me. Its a bloated hatchback with a turbo but sadly no manual transmission.

Kona N is cool, and I do not care that it doesn’t have a manual. If you want to row your own gears, Hyundai has the Elantra N for you right there.

All the fastback SUV coupe thingies. Its all the weight, handling, and inefficiency of an SUV with the cargo capacity and price of an expensive sports car.

These vehicles, for the most part, are status symbols. People love showing off their status. At least they don’t look like absolutely everything else on sale right now.

On the affordable end of the spectrum, I think the weirdest cars on sale are the Hyundai Sonata N Line and the TRD Camry. FWD, 300 HP big family cars that aren’t quite sport/ cars but rip in a straight line and hold a big family.

The Camry TRD is such a good example. I’ll be honest, there are few cars I’ll willing break my neck for, just to get a look at before a Camry TRD. It’s so weirdly wonderful. Why did Toyota make it? I’ve got no clue, but I’m glad it did.

Citroën Ami

100 percent the Citroen AMI. 8 horsepower, top speed of 28 miles per hour. 40 miles of electric range. and barely fits two people. priced at around 10,000 euros before tax. there is nothing else like it and has to be high on the list of weirdest cars on any road for sale right now.

The Ami is such a cute little thing, but you’re right. It’s very weird. That’s great though! I get why it’s not sold here, as no one would buy one. I’m heading over to Europe next month, and I cannot wait to see one in person.

Toyota Crown

Toyota Crown

Image for article titled These Are the Weirdest Cars On Sale Today, According to You
Photo: Toyota

I want to know who at Toyota thought that this was a good idea:

I sort of get their thinking — “Hey, all the old folks are driving CUVs now instead of buying the Avalon, so let’s make a tall Avalon.” But this thing is far too oddly styled and proportioned for the target demographic people who would’ve bought an Avalon. Yes, sure, it has a higher hip point. You know what else does? A Toyota Venza, which is cheaper and nearly as nice, plus has more useful cargo space. Up-trimmed Camrys are also nice for sedan-only folks, and the Lexus ES is only a bit more expensive than the Crown.

I just...why? Why does this exist?

The Crown is delightfully weird. Old people are going to absolutely love them!
