As soon as I get home after a long day, the first thing I do is kick off my shoes. It’s the universal indicator that it is time to unwind and relax, and to quit stressing about everything. That’s why, I believe, it’s perfectly justified to drive barefoot, too.

Driving is a stressful practice. There’s a lot going on. It’s only natural and healthy to find ways of easing that stress while driving. A great way to do that would be to take your shoes off.

Raphael Orlove disagrees. Raph demands that all drivers be forced to keep their feet—the natural, beautiful shoes of the human body—locked away in foot jail.

Raph’s biggest counterargument to my pro-barefoot position is the ridiculous and unlikely event that you are somehow forced from your vehicle, like in the event of a bear attack, or a bird attack, or the nuclear apocalypse.

All of these relate to slim chances you have to exit the vehicle, and he had no argument against actually being barefoot in normal situations while safely seated inside the vehicle. And as he points out, it’s not illegal.
