I don’t think I’ll ever forget the day that I got my driver’s license. It was a disgustingly hit day in the middle of July and I was nervous as hell. I’d already failed the driving test once on the parallel parking segment and I was worried I was going to fail again. Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on who you ask), the test instructor and the state of Maryland decided that I was worthy of having a driver’s license.

I did not use my own car or even my parent’s car to take the test. In Maryland, the test car needs to be free of warning lights and equipped with mostly modern safety equipment. My family’s aging fleet of vans and pickup trucks wasn’t going to cut it. I ended up borrowing a Toyota Yaris from my mom’s boss. Its small size made all the related parking tests a breeze. It was a profoundly boring and cramped car but I’ll always remember it fondly.
