The Porsche Mission E Ushers In Our Terrifyingly Fast And Silent Electric Future

The Porsche Mission E, in a heated battle with the wind over which can make a quieter “whoosh” sound, tested on the Nürburgring recently. It’s what cars do. If you have negative opinions about it or electric cars overall, do not share them out loud. Your whispers won’t be quiet enough to keep a secret from this thing.

Maybe we should be used to silent Nürburgring runs by now, considering that electric cars have been a thing for a century. But for some reason, going from Nürburgring footage with the roar of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (what Porsche 911 GT2 RS?) to this is still an odd transition.

Just listen to this new Mission E video for yourself, and be sure to keep your speakers at a safe volume. The silence is deafening:

The car looks like it’s melting on itself because it’s not in the typical patterned camouflage used on most test mules, and there are more photos of it at Motor1. One of the few parts that isn’t covered up is the set of fake tailpipes in the back, which the car doesn’t need because it isn’t spewing emissions everywhere.

The Mission E concept that came out in 2015 had more than 600 horsepower, and Porsche said it could do 0 to 62 mph in 3.5 seconds. The estimates back then were that the first Mission E production cars would be on the streets in 2019 at the earliest, and that it could charge to 80 percent in 15 minutes. Sounds fast.

Maybe that was a bad word choice. The Mission E doesn’t sound like anything.
