Not all superheroes wear capes, and apparently, not all wear clothes either. An Australian recently man woke up at night to a commotion, walking outside in his underwear to see a car fleeing a crash scene. Without wasting the time to put on clothes, he jumped in his car and helped police chase the person down.
Before we get to what happened, the underwear superhero, Daniel McConnell, probably explains things the best:
According to ABC News, McConnell went outside at 2 a.m. local time on Thursday to see that a car crashed into a restaurant near his home. The restaurant wasn’t open, and McConnell said in a video interview with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that the driver attempted to flee the scene by saying he fell asleep at the wheel. But since McConnell didn’t think the driver looked like he’d been asleep, he told Australia’s Today that he started “chasing him in [his] jocks.”
“I come outside in me jocks, and I seen old mate…and I said, ‘oi, what are you doing here mate, you gotta wait here,’ and he’s like, ‘na, na, I fell asleep behind the wheel,’” Mr McConnell told TODAY reporter Jess Millward.
“He’s just started taking off, so I’ve run inside, jumped in me little purple car, and started chasing him up the street.
That was exactly what the driver told him not to do. From CBS News:
“All I had was me undies on and he started to take off up the street and I said: ‘What are you doing, mate?’ and I started following him. He’s like: ‘Don’t be a hero,’” McConnell said.
McConnell said he returned home to grab his keys then gave chase again in his car, still nearly naked.
McConnell chased the driver until he went down a side street, and instructed the “coppers” on which way to go. CBS News reports that Queensland state police acknowledged McConnell’s help on catching the driver, who was later charged with unlicensed driving.
According to CBS News, the driver, 35, will appear in court in January and more charges are possible. Meanwhile, McConnell is now quite the celebrity.
