When the brains behind Luftgekühlt—a celebration of all things Porsche—decided to build a car to auction off for charity, it was like they tapped into that really crunchy part of my brain that just wants to see 911s go sideways and splash through the mud. I need it. I need it so much.
Why a rally 911? There are too few rally 911s. This is a fact that not only racing driver and Luftgekühlt co-founder Patrick Long points out, but a dire situation that needs remedying right now. Who doesn’t love seeing a 911 get dirty?
For this car, they started off with a 1985 Porsche Carrera Coupe and kitted it out with custom suspension, a limited-slip differential, skid plates, rally lights, rally wheels, and a host of other off-road modifications. The suspension uses the exact same valving as one of the Rothmans 911 rally cars and features a full nine inches of travel for all the sweet jumps you want to do with it.
Naturally, the trunk lid sports a ducktail wing, because if you’re designing a customized 911 and don’t include one of those, you make me sad.
Proceeds from the car’s sale will benefit Autumn Leaves Project, which funds pancreatic cancer research. Also, my birthday is coming up in June. That means you buying me this car is a win-win situation.
