The new Rolls-Royce Dawn is a convertible. Does it have a retractable hard top, the supposed high point in convertible technology? Hell no! it’s all fabric, because soft tops are true luxury.
As Rolls-Royce says itself, “the only choice for a Rolls-Royce was a fabric roof for reasons of aesthetics, romance and brand appropriateness. There is nothing more romantic than driving a convertible in the rain at night and hearing the drops pattering on the roof.”
Damn straight!
The difficult thing about retractable hard tops is they take up a lot of space in the back of the car. It follows that this Rolls Royce claims to have prioritized interior room in the back of this new car.
The good thing about retractable hard tops is that they can be as quiet as regular coupes, but RR claims that they’ve made this new Dawn “the quietest convertible car in the world today.” They French seamed the fabric so that there aren’t any weird concave depressions (like in BMW’s convertible 6 Series, for instance), and that helps keep the wind calm and the car quiet.
The top reportedly takes 22 seconds to go down. The wood decking in the back is from Canadel.
The only question that remains is if anyone really wants to be seen in a convertible superluxury car in 2015. I thought the rich were still hiding in shame these days.
