Jaguar is currently experimenting with projecting a camera feed on the roof pillars to give you a 360 degree view of what's going on outside, and ghost cars projected in front of you to make navigation easier in a busy city.
Jaguar Land Rover wants to reduce distraction with ghost cars helping us in city traffic while the 'transparent' pillars should solve the visibility problem that's pretty much unavoidable with the ultra safe passengers cells we demand.
The idea is that a screen would be embedded in the surface of each pillar that would take a live video feed from cameras covering the angles outside the car, thus eliminating blind spots completely. The Head-Up display would also highlight other road users with an on-screen halo moving across the car's virtual windscreen.
The system would switch on automatically as the vehicle approaches a junction, or when the driver indicates to change direction even by just moving their head to look over their shoulder. Naturally, it would also use all the information available from the Cloud, to which the car is always connected.
The ghost car navigation on the other hand uses the heads-up display to project an image of a vehicle in front of the driver's car for them to follow, turn by turn. In this way, there's no need to look at road signs or other distractions, making the overall experience safer and less stressful for everybody.
Well, it's virtual reality alright, but JLR is getting really good at it.
