As enthusiasts, we take changing the oil in our cars very seriously. But for many people changing the oil is an afterthought and look for the cheapest and easy way possible. These folks usually get what they pay for. The New Jersey consumer office has just issued a "stop sale" due to deceptive products for deceptive labeling.

According to NJ.com, the Stop-Use and Removal Order is the result of an investigation by the state attorney general's office. In independent lab tests, investigators found that each of the oils failed to live up to the viscosity measurements specified on their own labels.

"The products we're banning here today were found to have widely and unacceptably at variance with industry standards," said Steve Lee, acting consumer affairs director at state attorney general's office. "These products therefore bear misleading labels that provide the consumers with no way to know whether they are appropriate for specific vehicles."

Retailers and automotive professionals are now required to stop selling and using the 19 motor oil products, and to remove them from their stores. Failure to comply could face a $100 civil fine per package or container of each motor oil.
