The latest data from General Motors' victims' compensation program now puts the ignition switch death toll at 27, and there's at least another 151 fatality claims still under review.
As of October 10, the fund has approved another four payouts for deaths related to the recall, which previously stood at 23.
Kenneth Feinberg has been tasked with investigating the 1,371 claims made to the program, of which 1,193 are non-fatal injuries, and GM has set aside between $400 and $600 million to compensate victims.
Claims regarding the ignition switch recall began to come in on August 1 and will be accepted through the end of the year. Feinberg says that well-defined cases normally take around 90 days to process, while more complex investigations can last as much as 180 days. So far, only 25 injury claims have been ruled as valid.
