One of the things I like best about Hot Wheels as a maker of really small toy cars is that, even when shrunk down to an absurd 1/64th the size of a car, they often still manage to cram in some satisfying detail. I got my son this little VW Thing, and was delighted at this engine bay.
What I like is that the minuscule engine there is very clearly a Type I VW air-cooled engine. And, even better, it's a modified engine. You can see the twin carb setup — I'm going to say those are Kadrons, like I run, and you can also make out the headers, the type of fan shroud, and, if I'm not mistaken, I think that's a tiny turbo on there.
I could be wrong, but I think that's the little unit just to the right of the left carb's air cleaner. Also, the sculptor took the time to put in the starting crank hole in the rear center of the bumper, too.
This is a 99¢ toy. My son will play with it, bury it, throw it, roll it, clutch it in his sleep, and probably much, much more. It just makes me happy to see this degree of attention and care paid to something so tiny and cheap.
