You hear "armored passenger car" and think of something a dictator would ride in to plow through a picket line of peasants. But apparently a lot of folks want the protection without the high-profile, as proven by this incredibly eclectic selection of armored cars for sale on this Colombian classifieds site.
TuCarros.com looks like a pretty standard car sales site, other than the fact that it's got a "Carros Blindados" (armored cars) section with almost 240 of the most plain-ass looking cars, trucks, and SUVs that are apparently fortified against attack.
There are a few fancier German cars and rugged looking SUVs that fit the bill of what you might expect to be armored, but they're outnumbered by Mazda sedans and middle-aged pickup trucks. There's a Renault Clio in this catalogue!
The listings here are pretty basic so it's hard to tell what extent these cars have been reinforced, but whatever's been done is impossible to see from these photos.
Being able to buy armored automobiles that look standard is nothing new, but this is the first time I've seen the treatment given to economy cars. That said, it makes a lot of sense for someone with legitimate security concerns to want to fly under the radar. Or those who want protection without the added price of a new Mercedes.
