You know what people say about convertibles. You trade the wind in your hair and the sun on your face for extra weight and lots of body roll. It's fun, but anathema to performance. But with the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible, it's all pros, no cons.

"The Big Nasty has flipped its lid," GM's Mark Reuss said in New York tonight. I like that.

See, the Z06 vert's weight is nearly identical to the coupe version, and it's actually 20 percent stiffer than the old C6 Z06 coupe it replaces. It has the essentially the same options as the Z06 coupe too, including the Z07 track package.

Most importantly it packs a 625 horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter V8 coupled to a seven-speed manual or an eight speed paddle-shift automatic. Zero to 60 mph happens in under 3.5 seconds.

If convertibles are for hair dressers, the hair dresser that owns this one will be serious about track days. Or they will go to ordinary folks who love to enjoy a bit of sunshine while they're driving hard and fast.

The droptop Z06 made its debut tonight at a preview party before the New York Auto Show, and I can tell you it's every bit as stunning as its roof-having twin.

If there was ever a hi-po convertible sports car where you could have your cake and eat it too, this seems to be it.
