Porsche already confirmed that they're going to be dropping a flat-four cylinder engine into the 2015 Porsche Boxster and the Cayman, but we haven't heard a peep out of the motor itself. But this really truly maybe definitely possibly could be might be the sound of Porsche's future on the Nurburgring.
Maybe.
Now, I'll be the first to admit that that conjecture isn't really based on anything at all except the video above. No super-secret sources here, which is part of why I'm throwing the video up here. But the engine heard in the back of this Porsche 911 sounds markedly different from the flat-six normally seen in Porsche's sports cars over the past 20 years.
It sounds like only four pistons are pumping away. In fact, it sounds exactly how you'd imagine if Porsche made a four-cylinder engine. For comparison, listen to this Porsche 911 with the stock exhaust system:
So yeah, the top video sounds much different, more buzzy-hum and less growly-grr, especially at the top end, because we use only the most scientific acoustical terms here at Los Jalops.
But if it is indeed a four-cylinder engine in the video above, it raises a really interesting question.
Why is Porsche testing it out in a 911, and not a Boxster or a Cayman? It could be something as simple as the company is trying to throw people like us off the trail.
OOORRRRRRRRRR maybe they're planning to drop put the four-cylinder into the 911. Which would be cool, I guess.
Anybody else ready for the return of the Porsche 912?
