A man fleeing Austin police drove through a barricade and crashed into a crowd of people attending in the SXSW music festival, killing two on a moped, and injuring dozens others.
Police Chief Art Acevedo told reporters that a man in a Toyota sedan was stopped by police near I-35 downtown as part of a routine DUI stop. The man slipped away from the patrol car, drove the wrong way down 9th street towards downtown and crashed through a barrier at Red River and "stuck multiple pedestrians" before hitting more people.
Witnesses told the Austin American Statesman they saw the driver accelerate into the crowd, sending victims flying.
The man will be charged with two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault.
