Last year's inaugural Jalopnik Film Festival was a gratifying and moving day of car film love and the only thing we wanted to change was that we wanted to make it bigger and better. How do we do that? The Jalopnik Film Festival, Sponsored By Volvo, will allow you to make and submit your films. It's going to be awesome.
While the first annual Jalopnik Film Festival was a great success, every person who talked about the festival with us said they thought that we could do more than just show films, we should actually encourage filmmaking about cars as it's absolutely vital to the preservation of car culture and car history.
That's right, we're making a real film festival here. How can I promise it'll be the greatest car film event ever? It's because you're going to be involved.
We'll have amazing premiere films from the best people in the business, as well as give awards and help you produce the car film of your dream. There's a lot to get excited about, so let's start with you.
A Real Film Festival Means You Can Submit Your Films
There's so much great film made about cars — whether a single camera action film of a rally stage or a full-blown 10-minute narrative clip about stealing a car — and yet there's no one who recognizes all of it. People do great car films for clients or for passion and to encourage more of it.
To that end, we're inviting you to submit your films. Full legal details/submission info below, but basically we'll take any car film between 30 seconds and 120 minutes, whether narrative or documentary, animated or live-action, and review it with our esteemed panel of independent judges. If you shot it and you think it's great we want to see it, too.
If you've had a project you want to do but haven't, here's another reason to get it done. You have until September 5th to submit your film. Already made something great? So long as it was produced or originally screened after the last Film Festival (September 19th) we're going to accept it.
We don't yet have categories for review because we've never done one of these before, so we're going to look at your submissions and group them logically based on the information you provide. But let us know what kind of film you made when you submit it, either:
- Narrative
- Documentary
- Animation
- Foreign Language (subtitled in English)
Likely categories for review will be things like: best action camera sequence, best short documentary, best feature, best film about car culture, best film about motorsports, et cetera.
The selected winners will be featured alongside our series of premiere films at the festival.
A Real Film Festival Means Real Premiers You Can Watch
Last year we had the first public showing of "RUSH" and this year we're going to top that with premieres of a wide range of films about cars and car culture. These will be our "official selections" and the list of what we're planning to bring is so incredible and mind-blowing we simply couldn't contain it in one post so stay glued to this sub-blog for more information.
The big screening night will be Thursday, November 6th right here in New York City and it'll be a mix of special guests, big films, and your award-winning submissions. More on this to come. Oh, and there will be a big party. There's always a party.
Volvo Is Going To Help You Make The Film Of Your Dreams
Have a great idea for a film but lack the resources to produce one on your own? Don't worry because Volvo, the premiere sponsor of this year's festival, is here to help. In addition to paying for all of this they agreed to help us help you make a film about car culture.
Volvo is going to provide the cars and the money to make a short film about "WHY WE CARE" about car culture. You don't have to have ever made a film in your life, you just have to have a good idea and we'll have a great filmmaker guide you through the process.
The winner will get all of this and then have their film premiered at the Jalopnik Film Festival. Full details here. The deadline for this specific contest is August 25th.
Full Legal Details/How To Submit
The rules and conditions outlined right here, which is where you'll also submit your film. Once again: SUBMIT YOUR FILMS HERE.
The deadline to submit is September 5th, 2014. If you have trouble with the online form here's a PDF with submission details.
