After signs that it could be based on the front-wheel-drive Taurus platform (heresy!) or killed altogether, it looks like there could be a future for Australia's affordable rear-wheel-drive sedan after all. That future? The Mustang.
If you haven't noticed, Ford's stopping its policy of making awesome cars for Europe and Australia and shitty cars for America, instead simply deciding to just give us the awesomeness we always wanted. The policy is called One Ford and it means global platform sharing.
The fallout from Ford's very own Awesomness Manifesto was that the uniquely platformed Falcon was left hanging. Now, according to The Age, Ford CEO Alan Mulally's been dropping ‘Stang platform sharing hints.
"When you look at all of the vehicles people want ... there are a set of vehicles that rear-wheel-drive makes a lot of sense (for)," Mulally said. "We're going to continue to make what customers really want and value - starting with you [Australians]. We love our rear-wheel-drive platforms and we love Mustang, and they're global platforms."
A four-door Mustang or a Mustang Ute? We're disposed positively towards that idea.
