First 2009 Chevy Camaro Engine Bay Photos, Also With Motion Blur

Well, it's certainly been raining spy photos of the 2009 Chevy Camaro around these parts this week, isn't it? First it was our first set of interior photos of the new Camaro, and then word last night Chevy's new two-door man-o-war was making its way into LA. Our super-secret sources have snapped some more blurry camera phone shots for us of Chevy's new muscle car and for the first time we're able to take a look at the engine bay of the new RWD Aussie mullet-master. Unfortunately, it's only housing an engine with a 6 in it rather than a big ol' V8, but beggars can't be choosers. We're assuming that's the 3.6-liter that's currently found in the Pontiac G8. In addition to the engine pr0n, we've also got a hot shot of interior shots — with a little bit more detail than before. So what can we now say conclusively? Well, we're liking the door panels and the lighting on the center stack is helping to make things look a little bit less plastic-y. And check out that halo of light around the tach and speedo! And oh yes, it appears the Camaro will have OnStar.

Remember to check out our full Muscle Car Wars coverage!

[conspiracy]Is this world full of crack heads in earthquake zones wearing roller blades while drunk? Sometimes I question the pics as just a random Joe on the streets. We can all hold cameras still.. I think GM is playing tricks with our heads.[/conspiracy]

I really really dig the gauges. The car is looking sharp inside.

  • Not a big fan of the "Number Five is Aliiiive" gauge cluster. And a switchblade key? Even Toyota is using starter buttons now. Otherwise, no comment.

@TexanIdiot25: Nah, not a conspiracy -- these definitely didn't come from GM.

  • Image of TexanIdiot25 TexanIdiot25 at 04:55 PM on 01/29/08 *

@Ray Wert: (with shifty eyes) You never know..

Actually, a pet-peeve of mine is clear pics.. Wish they would test these in Texas.

Anyone else notice the Speedo goes to 160, with the numbers 120, 140, and 160 in red? It begs to go into the red.

I bet POLAR took these photos and Mary-Louise was standing next to him twirling his hair.

I dig it, looks pretty swanky to me.

@TexanIdiot25: I also notice the numbers above 120 in red.

    Is that a challenge??

  • Image of charles_barrett charles_barrett at 05:05 PM on 01/29/08 *

@TexanIdiot25: I'm glad it's not just me... I was thinking my medication was off, or it was time for new glasses...

  • WERT!

Tell your source to climb underneath and get some shots of the rear end.

    Does it play mario paint?

@Charles_Barrett: You might need to refill that medication, just in case.

  • Uh-oh, those ugly headlights are still there...

  • Center console is still horrible, but everything is nice. I like the main gauges. And yes, the numbers in red are definitely a challenge!

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 05:25 PM on 01/29/08 *

I hope theres an option box for OnStar delete...

  • @ash78: I applaud GM for not getting on the regressive starter button fad. Let me just get in my car , insert the key, turn it and go, man!

Also, why is the brake fluid low on a brand new car?

  • Image of B B at 05:35 PM on 01/29/08 *

@wannabewannabe: Isn't the point of the starter button that all you have to do is get in, push a button, and go?

  • @Miscellanea: It's still a helluva lot better than most Pontiac gauges, circa 1984. The numbers were mostly white on a black backgound, which were lit by a red backlight at night...

  • I really hope that isn't the door unlock buttons in the center of the stack!

  • That's a Direct Injection LLT straight out of the new CTS. The only thing missing from the beauty cover is the Cadillac crest. 304hp, 276 lb-ft in the Caddy. 276lb-ft comes out to about 370 Nm, which could explain the torque gauge maximum.

  • @Gradall: Certainly looks like it.

  • @wannabewannabe: "Also, why is the brake fluid low on a brand new car?"
It is a chevy, after all.

    zing!

  • Image of charles_barrett charles_barrett at 06:05 PM on 01/29/08 *

@Gradall: Actually, my doorlock switch on my '97 E320 is on the centerstack even further up (below the center vents). Works ergonomically for me.

  • Image of Dr.Danger is in Denial Dr.Danger is in Denial at 06:07 PM on 01/29/08 *

@WorkingOnYourInvoice: It already needs to be serviced when you drive it 10 miles from the dealer.

  • @Dr.Danger: This is a clear indication of how bad the problem really is. The car isn't even in mass production yet, and it's in need of service. I wonder if the warning lights were shown in the original artist's conceptions.

  • These vehicles are built in Australia, yes? Maybe the instrument panel in the photos is configured for kph instead of mph, with red indicating illegal-for-Australia speeds.

Sort of like the dark days here in the US when '55' was highlighted on every speedometer.

  • I think the unlock botton is actually the botton to disable the traction control... I could be wrong. As for the brake fluid, could it be that it's just the info centre when you first turn on the ignition displaying info? To add to that, the picture to the left of that has a "hood open" warning. Never seen that on any other car...

  • Overhead console looks cool... it even has the passenger side seatbelt warning placed there.

  • And please disregard my previous comment about the door lock botton...

  • I thought the official word was that the Camaro was getting the 3.9 V6 instead of the 3.6.

  • this is obviously a test mule, not a brand new vehicle.. i bet that GM engineers have been beating the shit out of it for the past few months - that's why the car is in such a shitty condition.. service lights on, floor mat gone basically (1st set of shots) and the fluids are low..

  • Please! I don't care how nice the plastic texture is, it's plastic wrapped around shapes that don't need to exist anywhere in the universe - especially in front of a person's face for XXX,XXX miles. Does Lutz think these leaked shots impress us more than the taped-up plastic of a week or two ago?

  • I wonder how many potential buyers are going to be pumped when they see their kids' PlayBox controllers echoed in the interior of the retro muscle car they've been waiting years for.

  • I bet those 120/140/160 numbers in red are because if you were to actually try to take this car that fast with its crappy american v6 it would explode around 135-140. That is assuming it had enough grunt to make it that high to start.

  • That engine cover looks alot like the caddys 3.6 DI v6 engine cover. I dont know if the regular 3.6 has the same cover.

  • This is great - it shows a lot of attention to detail I haven't known from a GM product since well, ever. I remember how in the 80s almost every GM car and truck had the same crappy door handles that felt like they would fall apart (Fiero/S-10 pickup I recall). These look unique to the Camaro. The A/C controls look chunky and substantial (better than what you see in a Mercedes). Along with the digital readout, key remote, and unique steering wheel, etc., to me it looks like GM's new and better interiors are not a fluke.

  • @Dorsai:
140 km/h is ridiculously low for a speedometer, it's got to be MPH.

That HVAC and radio binnacle still looks like hell, but the retro dual gauge setup is alright and the door panel is cool. I'm surprised GM didn't find a more awkward place to put the power window controls, like under the seat or in the trunk.

  • I can't say I hate the interior, but it is awful gimmicky.

  • @B: It's my understanding that most push button starter cars still require you to insert the key in a slot to unlock the ignition, notwithstanding cars where the key fob stays in your pocket and tells the car by an RF signal that it's in the pants of the rightful owner. It is my further understanding that said RF key fobs tend to be expensive options. In my mind, the starter button gimmick is a solution to a problem that never existed and emblematic of the over-complification of modern cars for the sake of doing something differently, not necessarily better.

  • Well, it looks like that sheisty plastic cover will be the first thing to go. Wonder how much room can be made by relocating all that electronics to another spot so you can install a pair of forward swept headers for a nice Turbo.

  • Image of danio3834 danio3834 at 08:30 PM on 01/29/08 *

@wannabewannabe: One car company I am familiar with, Nissan, has fully embraced the push button start.

Honestly, its a gimmick i could do without. I constantly found myself looking for the key fob. The tradtional lock cylinder is necessary if solely for the purpose of keeping your key in a location where you know where it is.

Just for fun, i tried the trick of throwing the fob out the window in a parking lot and driving away. That was before i knew how the system worked, i found out as soon as i shut the car off and tried to restart. LOL

Key In Hole is the way to go.

  • What a horrible engine compartment. It looks like a Star Trek (OG) shuttle craft. Even for a V6, it should inspire grunting and words like, "bad-ass." This looks like something out of a Camry. No, wait... the Camry looks more bad-ass.

Seriously, how am I going to be able to lift the hood and show off my new Camaro when it looks like that. My vote would be to uncover it all, but if you have to cover it, at least make it look cool.

  • Image of TexanIdiot25 TexanIdiot25 at 09:14 PM on 01/29/08 *

@skylark64: Takes two minutes to pull the cover off.

  • * Honestly, how dificult is it to use 2 hands to hold a camera???

    PLEASE, PLEASE NOT THIS INTERIOR.

I waited 10 years so you could piss in my corn flakes??

You spend more time INSIDE the car than outside, one could argue the inside is MORE important & deserves priority.

But here it looks like an after thought.

  • Sigh... I hate engine covers. Is this an engine bay or a close up of the Death Star surface? Look at a PRV V6 intake manifold, there's some engineering art right there.

Citroens have switchblade keys, this thing should be a hit with this crowd.

  • the fact that this is a 6-cylinder car supports my theory that the lower models of the Camaro will have a different front end than the SS models (which i hope will have the not-ugly conceot car headlights), kind of like how the V6 and GT mustangs have different grilles...

@Bento: It wasn't my hair she was twirling.

  • Image of UDMan UDMan at 08:53 AM on 01/30/08 *

Looking at the HVAC controls, it looks like they tried to concentrate all functions using 2 knobs, and push buttons every where else. Remember this interior?

Three knob controls for the HVAC, a little more substantial looking, and a neat gauge cluster in the center console.

  • Hey - will the valve cover actually say "Jalopnik" on it? 'Cause that'd be schweet!

I'd buy that. The Jalopnik Camaro.

  • @POLAR_HAS_PAPERBITS_ON_HIS_ARSE: Her restraining order, perhaps?

  • Image of POLAЯBEEЯ POLAЯBEEЯ at 09:21 AM on 01/30/08 *

A letter recently sent to Jalopnik...

    Dear sirs,
Please allow me to be approaching you with a matter. My frand says yous guys sell the cars, and now I find yous sell the Hi-perfoming Jalopnik motors. I need the motors for my Dacia and if my frand geevs yous the powerful Jeeps slogan I am full of hoping that you will geevs me the disckownt! I can be pleased to hear from you too.

@AmishJohn: She does not have a straining odour, she smells very nice.
