After Lando Norris helped McLaren defeat Ferrari in the F1 constructors’ championship last year, another Ferrari in Lando’s life was crashed on the roads around Monaco: His own personal F40. A friend of the British driver lost control of the F1 star’s F40, spinning it back first into a guardrail. While the damage is certainly repairable, it won’t be cheap to find replacement parts for the Ferrari. The preowned section of the Italian automakers’ site has a used F40 for sale at $3.5 million.
TikTok user thanosofmonaco posted the crash footage online, and Top Gear later reported that Norris owned the sports car but was not behind the wheel. The F40 was rounding a corner when the rear stepped out on exit. As the Ferrari was sliding towards a parked truck, the driver overcorrected and spun out in the opposite direction. When the F40 pulled away there was a significant chuck of the rear bumper ripped off the left side. While even racing drivers make mistakes, it would be a safe bet that Norris’ friend wasn’t a professional.
While the F40 is known for its sharp lines, it’s also notorious for the turbo lag. The 2.9-liter V8 engine in the back produces over 470 horsepower. After mashing the throttle, the power can purportedly kick in like a mule an eternity later. YouTube fabricator nerd Mike Burroughs did just that last year, putting the 6.5-liter from Ferrari’s 812 Superfast into the late ‘80s sports car. It’s a massive jump in power, but there’s no turbo lag.
