The latest trailer for Iron Man 3 dropped yesterday, and I had two major takeaways from it: First, the movie looks like it's going to be insanely awesome. Second, Tony Stark has apparently ended his dalliance with Acura and gone back to his first love, Audi.
As many of you probably know, the billionaire genius-asshole behind Stark Industries and the Iron Man suit drove an Audi R8 in the first film and an R8 Spyder in the second. But then
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zsd_x…The Avengers happened, and that movie was loaded down with Acura product placement. But what was Tony Stark supposed to do, trade his R8 for a ZDX?
Girl, please. Instead Acura made him a one-off Acura NSX-like sportscar that ended up previewing what the actual NSX concept would look like, just with a roof. The car Robert Downey Jr. drove in The Avengers was actually just an extensively modified 1991 NSX, 20-year-old interior and all.
Now that he's starring in his third solo adventure, it looks like that car has flown the coop in favor of an Audi R8 E-Tron, which can be seen at several points in the trailer, including flying off a cliff when attack helicopters blow up his California home. Why? Because Audi's the sponsor again this time and they want him in an R8 E-Tron.
That all-electric supercar is supposedly still a prototype, and one that may never see production, but it did set a new Nurburgring lap record last year.
Frankly, this seems more up Tony Stark's alley to me than the faux-NSX. Acura's way too boring for that guy. Maybe the R8 he drives in this movie is hooked up to an Arc Reactor. I wonder what kind of range that would get?
