When quarterly sales figures come out, it’s common to focus on the cars that sold the most in the previous three months. That’s certainly interesting on some level, but at the same time, most of the top sellers are pretty consistent. Presumably, the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet Silverado will take the top two spots, then throw in a few of the most popular compact crossovers and the Ram 1500, and you’ve generally got the top five vehicles for total sales.

One metric that we find particularly interesting, though, is the cars that posted the biggest year-over-year sales increases. Sometimes the top performers make it because, for whatever reason, demand has increased. Other times, it’s because production has increased enough to finally get more cars into the hands of the people who want them. Regardless, it’s always fun to see which vehicles’ sales are on the upswing. So let’s take a look at the winners from Q1 this year.

Last year, Ford sold 21,478 Mavericks in the first quarter. In the same time period this year, Ford sold 52,323, which works out to a 144-percent increase in year-over-year sales. Not bad for the little truck that could.

The Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R have received plenty of criticism since they were redesigned, but the German automaker still managed to sell 3,645 of them last quarter. The year before, it only sold 1,489 Golfs, meaning that year-over-year, sales are up 145 percent.

With only 3,538 2 Series models sold last quarter, BMW isn’t exactly setting overall sales records with its smallest car. Still, executives have to be happy to see a 156-percent increase over the 1,383 it moved in Q1 of 2023.

Turning Wagoneer into a sub-brand hasn’t exactly worked out the way Jeep had originally been hoping, but on the plus side, it’s found a way to get more people to buy its massive three-row SUV. Sales jumped from 1,371 in Q1 last year to 3,550, which works out to about a 159-percent improvement.

Volkswagen hasn’t fully redesigned the Jetta in a while, but year-over-year, its sales have improved even more than the Golf. Last year, Volkswagen sold 4,574 Jettas in Q1, while this year, Q1 sales jumped to 13,024, or about a 185-percent improvement.

In 2023, Audi sold only 726 E-Tron GTs through the first three months of the year. This year, that figure increased to 2,798, which may not be a lot in total but still works out to a 285-percent jump in sales for Q1.

From the moment we first saw the redesigned Toyota Prius, we knew it was going to be a hit. So while Toyota only sold 3,350 Priuses in the first quarter of 2023, we’re not surprised to see that number jump up to 13,327 this last quarter. A 298-percent year-over-year increase really is nothing to complain about at all.

Unlike the Prius, we weren’t so sure that the U.S. would go for the high-riding Toyota Crown. Seeing Q1 sales of only 1,393 Crowns last year wasn’t hugely surprising. Fast forward a year, though, and sales have improved 452 percent to 7,685 units.

With 6,466 sales in the first quarter of 2023, the Chevrolet Trax already beat several of the cars on this list in total sales, but thanks to the appeal of its redesign has been selling far better than before. In the last three months, Chevrolet managed to move 481 percent more Trax crossovers, bringing its Q1 sales total to 37,587.

General Motors’ issues with getting Ultium-platform EVs are well-documented, but at least when it comes to the Cadillac Lyriq, that appears to be changing. While it sold 968 Lyriqs in Q1 last year, this year that figure has improved to 5,800. That works out to an increase of 499 percent.

While several of the vehicles on this list have pretty solid total sales figures considering their position in the overall market, BMW only managed to sell 560 X2s last quarter. We’re sure that figure will only increase as more examples of the recently redesigned model make their way to dealer lots, but at the very least, BMW can tell itself that 560 is a 609-percent improvement over the 79 it sold a year prior.

The Lexus RZ mainly appeals to people who very specifically want a Lexus that happens to be electric. In the first quarter of 2023, not long after it first went on sale, only 185 people bought one. Fast forward to the same time frame in 2024, and RZ sales climbed to 1,603. In total, that’s not very many, but year-over-year, that’s a 766-percent improvement.

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is another recently introduced EV that has seen a massive sales boost year-over-year. Last year, Q1 sales only totaled 222, but this year, that figure jumped to 3,646. That works out to a 1,542-percent increase. As it turns out, cheap leases really do move units.

The Mazda CX-90 had barely gone on sale by the time Q1 ended last year, so it’s not surprising that Mazda only reported 222 sales over that timeframe. Fast forward a year, and sales are up 3,378 percent, bringing the total sold to a much more respectable 9,984 units.

Production of the GMC Hummer EV started slow but took a while to really take off. And by “really take off,” we mean that sales improved from two total Hummers in Q1 of last year to 1,669 in the most recent quarter. That’s not a lot in total, but year-over-year, that does work out to an 83,350-percent increase. If this trend continues, before you know it, every vehicle sold in the U.S. will be a Hummer EV. That’s how math works, right?
