As part of the same 70th anniversary celebrations that gave us the tragic new name of the Porsche Mission E, the automaker immediately made everything better and revealed a new Porsche 911 Speedster Concept.

The Speedster Concept is meant to echo the design of the early Porsche 356 Speedsters, with the two-tone paint job, unique rear-view mirrors, a shorter and more steeply-raked windshield, a special throwback wheel design and a fuel filler cap located in the center of the hood. The car looks incredible.

Mechanically, the 991 Speedster is based on the chassis and 500 horsepower 4.0-liter flat six engine from the 911 GT3, and a modified Carrera 4 body, but features carbon bucket seats, shorter side windows, and a clip-in roof cover.

As Road & Track pointed out, Porsche has done quite a few Speedster variants in the past, usually as a pleasant goodbye to a 911 generation. With the 991.2 911 on its way out, it only makes sense.

For now, the Speedster is only a concept car, but it’s very likely Porsche will ultimately go for a limited run of production cars at astronomical prices. I just hope I at least get to see one some day.
