The Four '60s Women Who Drove French Cars From Argentina To Alaska
Renault marks the 50th anniversary of the Renault 4 this year with a series of events around the world. It never officially made the United States — except back in 1965, when the company sent four women to drive from Tierra del Fuego to Alaska.
Dubbed "Les 4 Elles," the expedition was meant to show that the une petite 4 could tackle some of the world's toughest roads. If you're familiar with the Top Gear Bolivia special, you'll recognize some of the terrain, tackled without nearly as much complaining.
What the Renault film doesn't mention: That at one point the driveshafts broke, forcing one car to crab-crawl into the nearest town. And among the wear and tear on the cars were the names of young men scratched into the interior panels.
