Laguardia Airport in New York has been closed after Delta flight 1086, inbound from Atlanta, skidded off Runway 13 on landing. No injuries reported so far but the airport officials claim the airplane is on fire and the FDNY is transmitting a two alarm response.
FlightAware live flight tracking shows the plane arrived earlier this morning in the midst of a heavy snow storm. The 27 year old MD-88 appears to have slid onto an embankment and through a fence. Passengers are being evacuated.
The FAA now reports that the airport will be closed until 7pm EST due to the Delta MD88 off the runway. Expect SIGNIFICANT delays throughout the region.
According to weather reports at the time of the incident, there was moderate snow and freezing fog. The flight may have also landed with a tailwind.
Out of 131 occupants only 1 minor injury has been reported in what was nearly a disastrous plunge into the water.
