One of the few good things to happen this year was Porsche perfectionists Singer teamed up with William Advanced Engineering (yes, the Formula One Williams) to make a new air-cooled, naturally-aspirated, 9,000 RPM, 500-horsepower 4.0-liter flat six. Finally, we can hear it yarp.

“British summer testing,” Singer posted today. “Four valve, air cooled Porsche flat six. Restored and modified by Singer and Williams.”

The yowl. Too good.

I love the concept of a Singer. It’s the most perfect marriage of engineering and art. But man, what does this cost? I’ve heard in the neighborhood of $500k plus the donor 964. This is a tough nut to crack unless your toilet paper rolls are made of 500 euro notes. You have to be a money-is-no-issue type and an a hard-ass air cooled purist, considering the ‘merely rich’ can get a 911 GTS for $150k or a GT3 for around $200k. No need to modernize either of those.
