Pedestrians—including trick-or-treaters—were hit by a car in New York City on Halloween night, CNN reported. The city police department stated that three people were killed in the incident, and several others sustained injuries.
A 10-year-old girl was among those killed in the wreck along with two older men, all of whom lived nearby the scene of the accident. Those injured were three females, ages 3, 9 and 21. The injuries were not life threatening, and all three received treatment at a Bronx hospital.
The 52-year-old male driver of the car, reported by police as a Dodge Charger, is in stable condition as well. An investigation is underway, but police believe that the vehicle hit another car, drove onto a sidewalk and ended up in a nearby front lawn. From CNN:
The horrifying sequence of events unfolded just before 5 p.m. Saturday along Morris Park Avenue.
“There were families, kids trick or treating walking behind me,” eyewitness Kristina DeJesus told CNN affiliate WABC. “And all of a sudden, I heard the ‘boom’ and the car literally jumped over a parked car and flew into the gate, hitting a bunch of people.”
After the car came to rest, witnesses told WABC that the scene described as “grisly” included several body parts. One local witness said that he didn’t comprehend what he saw at first, and later “had to walk away.”
The investigation of exactly what happened at the scene—and what caused the incident—is ongoing.
Update: ABC News reports that police are now looking into whether a medical condition such as a seizure might have been involved in the wreck.
