See The 2024 Lexus GX 550 From Every Angle
The third-generation GX looks incredible, and we just got to drive it.
One of the most anticipated enthusiast vehicles of the year is the 2024 Lexus GX, which has finally entered its third generation. After thirteen years on sale the previous gen GX was looking and feeling old and frumpy, but the new GX has fantastically square styling with excellent details. Better still, its cabin has been completely overhauled and now feels as luxurious as the price tag suggests.
I've never really been a Land Cruiser or GX guy, after driving the 2024 GX 550 in Arizona last week I came away a believer. I took a lot of photos of this wonderful SUV, so take a click through the slideshow to see the new Lexus GX from every angle and pore over some of the best details.
Luxury Means Big Rims
This white example is the Luxury+ model, which has 22-inch wheels and body-color fender flares.
Overtrail For Going Over Trails
Seen here in Nori Green is the off-road–focused Overtrail model, which has upgrades like Lexus' E-KDSS suspension and a locking rear diff.
Boxy And Beautiful
The Overtrail's bumper designs are slightly different, plus it gets a front skidplate and a black roof.
Bigger And Better
The new GX is a few inches bigger than the outgoing model in nearly every dimension, but the front and rear overhangs are shorter.
Everything The Light Touches Is Gold, Or In This Case Green
The GX's nicely chamfered bodywork is a masterclass in surfacing, especially when viewed in the Arizona desert at sunset.
No Longer A Swinger
Instead of the old swing-out tailgate, the 2024 GX has a traditional top-hinged tailgate, and it still has a separately opening rear window.
Let Me Get A Better Look At Ya
Every GX comes with these awesome multibeam LED headlights.
All-Terrains For All Terrain
Overtrail models also get 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires; other trims have 20s or 22s with regular all-season tires.
Room To Reflect
I love the new side-view mirror design.
High Visibility
The headlights and taillights are mounted as high up as possible for the best visibility when off-roading.
Then And Now
The 2024 GX looks so much better than the outgoing model.
We Need More Hues
It even looks good in boring "colors." (Not pictured in this slideshow is the excellent beige color that's available on the Overtrail.)
Luxury At Last
The interior is a gigantic improvement over the old GX, with wholly modern tech, excellent ergonomics, great build quality and nice materials.
Touch Me
A 14-inch central touchscreen and 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster are standard, running Lexus' latest infotainment system with navigation, OTA updates, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and USB-C connectivity.
Twist Me
Depending on trim, the center console knob can control on-road drive modes, off-road drive modes and the new Crawl Control feature. The switch aft of the traditional shifter controls the four-wheel-drive system.
Everything Looks Better In Green
Overtrails have olive green suede inserts on the seats, plus contrasting stitching and other nice accents.
I Do Need Massaging Seats, Thanks
As standard the front seats are heated and ventilated, and in models like this Luxury+ they have 10-way power adjustment and a lovely massage function. Nearly every luxury feature, including the seats, are available on the Overtrail.
Room For Up To Seven
The second row is available as a three-across bench or as dual captain's chairs with a center console.
Not A Penalty Bench
Every GX except for the Overtrails comes standard with a two-person third row that is power-folding, and all passengers have more room in nearly every metric. At 5'9" I'm able to comfortably fit in the third row.
A Tight-Ish Squeeze
With the third row up cargo space is tighter than before...
The Magic Of Folding
...but fold the second row down and you've got lots of room.
So Many Horsepowers
The twin-turbo 3.4-liter V6 is paired with a 10-speed automatic and full-time four-wheel drive. It puts out 349 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, up from 301 hp and 329 lb-ft from the old GX's V8.
