See All Of Shanghai In One Amazing Timelapse

From the view out of its taxi cabs, to the paths of its ferries, from the top of its skyscrapers, to the kitchens of its tiniest restaurants. This is Shanghai, all in one timelapse.

This timelapse video, appropriately titled "This Is Shanghai," was done by city expert JT Singh and Rob Whitworth, who also did the frankly outstanding timelapse of Ho Chi Minh City back in 2011.

It's a little dizzying, but then it should be if it is going to loop through the lives of over 23 million people in a bit over two minutes.

Whitworth also sent us this picture of the kit used to make the short film. Fantastic.

I was expecting more of an evolution of the skyline, but this is still very cool.

I have a friend who's been living there for a year or so, but he's been doing business in Shanghai for nearly a decade. He says the city has changes massively in that time, that it's acquired a very different character.

He seems to like it, probably because he's looking at it more from the perspective of an upstart entrepreneur. That said, he does acknowledge that it's outrageously expensive living there. Think Manhattan prices, but with most residents only earning a fraction of the income. Americans think they know income disparity, but that's because they haven't been to China.
