The Tesla Model S Could Be The Most Economical Drag Racer Ever

Racing fuel is expensive. Electricity is inexpensive. The Tesla Model S uses electricity. And according to some math doings, that makes it one of the cheapest ways to get your ass quickly down a drag strip ever... If you don't count the price of the actual car.

Here is the best practice for drag racing a Model S from Drag Times:

  • Set the regenerative braking to full.
  • Turn off traction control.
  • Stomp on gas.
  • Run the quarter mile and max out at 114 MPH in the quarter, let off gas immediately past marker.
  • Let braking regenerate on the rundown.
  • Repeat

Going down the strip, you'll use 1.1 kWh of power. Regen recoups 0.6 kWh of power, making your power spend 0.5 kWh. The Model S Performance has an 85 kWh battery, which theoretically means it could make 170 runs before needing a charge. And Drag Times says that means that at current energy costs in Florida, each run would cost just $0.06.

How's that for going green?
