The Fast and Furious franchise would have you convinced that slapping a turbo onto your engine is easy. You just buy the turbo for some trivial amount of money, bolt it on, and away you go. But Hot Rod found out that when you purchase one of those cheap bolt-on kits from Amazon, it doesn’t go exactly as planned.
It’s an 11-minute video, and while the whole thing is good and you should definitely watch it, suffice it to say it doesn’t quite work properly when it was finished, and straight out of the box not enough made sense. There weren’t any instructions, different pieces didn’t fit right, and a lot of it required the assistance of sophisticated tools like a blowtorch and a hammer.
The end result was essentially an engine that was primed to explode at some point down the line, but at least you’d be going incredibly fast when everything did go bust.
PROTIP: If you’re going to install a turbo, don’t cheap out. Or really know what you’re doing.
