Tomorrow, March 21, should be a somber occasion for anyone who loves motorsports: it would by the late Ayrton Senna's 54th birthday had he not been tragically killed at Imola in 1994. My hat is off to Google for recognizing this with a nice Google Doodle salute.

As Opponaut ToyDeathbot pointed out this morning, the current Doodle on the Google New Zealand homepage is an illustration of Senna with a Formula One car decked out in the green and yellow colors of his home country, Brazil.

Senna, a three-time world champion who drove for Toleman, Lotus, Williams and most famously, McLaren, died at the age of 34 at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola, Italy when his car slammed into a wall. He is considered one of the greatest racing drivers in F1 history. His career and untimely demise were immortalized in the documentary Senna, which should be required watching for anyone who loves the pursuit of speed.

New Zealand is a day ahead of us Americans, so ToyDeathbot speculates it might become the Doodle for the rest of us tomorrow. I hope it does.

Update: Look! Google Australia is doing it too. Let's hope this becomes a thing.
