Infiniti dropped the curtain on their Q30 Concept at Frankfurt today, and at first glance it's hard to tell what they were going for here. Is it a hatchback or a small crossover? Kind of both, it turns out.

The Q30 turned out to be something quite different for Infiniti: what they call a "premium compact" that fits in size-wise between a hatchback and a small SUV. Australia's Motoring reports that it is longer, wider and taller than the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class, its two intended targets.

No word yet on what engine or platform it will use, but we've heard it could be on that A-Class/CLA-Class platform it will compete against thanks to the new Nissan-Renault/Daimler partnership.

I actually think it's attractive, and probably the best use of Infiniti's new flowing design language we've seen yet. Infiniti keeps saying they want to be a top-tier luxury brand, so good for them for trying something new and different rather than just following everyone else.

We'll have to see how it shakes out when it goes into production.
