A 22-year-old man in Washington D.C. came very close to ending his own life on the tracks of the Metro, were it not for the quick actions of Transit Police and the driver of the train headed his way.

WMATA officials say police were called out to the Rhode Island Avenue station around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday on reports that a man was acting strangely and harassing riders. When police arrived, the man said he wanted to die and jumped onto the track bed.

A Shady Grove bound train was mere moments from arriving the station, so police officers radioed for the train to stop and tried to get the conductor's attention by waving their arms. He immediately activated the emergency braking system.

Evidently the man had second thoughts about his course of action, because as we can see from this video he tried to jump away from the oncoming train and back onto the platform. When he did, an officer pulled him up in the nick of time.

The man wasn't hurt, but was taken to a local hospital for a mental health evaluation.
