This Rumor About An Eco-Friendly Porsche 911 Has To Be Bullshit

There's a rumor floating around various automotive websites that Porsche will unveil a surprise eco-friendly 911 at the Frankfurt Auto Show called the 911 Blu Edition. Porsche hasn't commented on it yet, but it has to be bullshit. Right?

As near as I can tell, the rumor and "leaked photos" originated on the 911 UK forum earlier this week. It claims that the 911 Blu Edition will be unveiled as part of the brand's 50th anniversary and will preview new technology that will be available when the 991 gets refreshed in 2014.

Supposedly, it will have a detuned, low-compression version of the 3.4-liter flat six good for 300 horsepower but only 211 pound-feet of torque. It will cut back on fuel usage and emissions by using an upgraded stop-start system, 18-inch hollow wheels, a trick aerodynamic system that reduces drag by closing the front radiator apertures, and a super-lightweight convertible hardtop.

On top of all that, they say the limited edition car will come equipped only with the PDK gearbox and retail at just under $100,000. Oh yeah — it will only come in blue with a red top, mirrors and front grill. It looks like ass in these pictures.

Let's count all the reasons it's probably not true:

  • It came from a forum
  • It looks like a Photoshop, and not a good one
  • There have been no previous rumors or spy shots of it
  • Really? Really?

Autoblog says you should take this news by "mainlining salt." I couldn't have said it better myself. For all the reasons listed here, especially the horsepower specs and the way it looks, I just don't see Porsche making this happen. We reached out to Porsche for comment, and we'll let you know if they get back to us. We assume they're still laughing right now.

The world will find out if it's real at the end of September in Frankfurt, I guess. In the meantime, don't hold your breath for this one.
