ok i've been on jalopnik a looooong time, and i finally just read the lemons rules and i don't understand the appeal

Entry: $500 per car + $100 per driver + $75 for non-drivers. (Each team must have 4-6 drivers.)

1.5: Winners and Prizes: The car which that completes the most laps is the Winner on Distance. The Winner on Distance receives $1500

so you pay $1000+ just to enter in the hopes of winning $1500? Not only that but "Your Car May Be Destroyed at Any Time: In addition to accidents and other unfortunate boo-boos, one car may be selected by blind ballot of all teams for immediate removal and total destruction. "

please explain this to me, why not just get a few of my buddies together and we drive around in circles for 24 hrs?
