Facelifted Genesis G80 Has Fresher Looks, New 27-Inch Screen And More Knobs
The G80 could get an updated V6 with an electric supercharger and mild-hybrid system
We saw the release of the updated Genesis GV80 SUV last month, which brought subtle exterior styling tweaks but a big overhaul to the cabin. Now, Hyundai's luxury brand unveiled the updated G80 sedan in Korea, which gets similar tweaks to keep this three-year-old luxobarge looking fresh.
The G80 is still a stunning sedan, so Genesis didn't need to change much of its design with this facelift. Its large crest grille features a new double-mesh diamond pattern, and the bumpers have been redesigned to be slightly more aggressive. The thin LED headlights have a new look with Micro Lens Array technology, there are new wheel designs, and the rear bumper has hidden exhaust tips.
On the inside, Genesis completely redesigned the G80's dashboard and center console. A new 27-inch touchscreen tops the dash, combining the gauge cluster and infotainment screen into one seamless display, and it can still be controlled by a crystal rotary knob on the center console. The climate controls have been redesigned, still using physical knobs and some new buttons in addition to a touch display, and there is a new row of media control buttons with actual knobs for volume and tuning. Sadly, the funky four-spoke steering wheel has been replaced by a more conventional three-spoke unit.
There's no official word on if Genesis has updated the G80's powertrains. The current G80 is offered with either a 300-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 or a 375-hp twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6, both of which come standard with all-wheel drive. Both engines might gain slight bumps in horsepower, but the real news could be the introduction of a higher-powered version of the V6 – the new GV80 Coupe adds an electric supercharger and 48-volt mild-hybrid system, bringing horsepower past 400, so the updated G80 Sport could also use that same setup.
While Genesis hasn't released any US-specific details for the updated G80, it should look identical to this Korean-spec model when it's shown in the next few months. Genesis has also yet to reveal updates to the Electrified G80; expect that to debut later in 2024.
