Ten Car Fads That Deserve To Die Forever

Tuning or customizing a car to your taste is great. These fads aren't.

Whatever you do, forget the following ten options for improving your ride:

10.) Gigantic Custom Sound Systems

POD says we don't want to mess with the system anymore:

The one fad that I have seen drop off a lot is large after market stereos. I think though, this has more to do with the "death of the DIN and double DIN" mounts in newer cars and the integration of nav and other controls through the factory head unit. Eiter way, I don't miss them.

And as OhDirka points out, factory stereos are getting better as well:

I was just talking about this to someone the other day. I came to the conclusion that most new cars offer a pretty damn good sound system stock theses days. I spent a lot of money in aftermarket stereos in my day but with what new cars come with standard is pretty good for most people.

9.) Murdered-Out Treatment

Ok, so this Lincoln is kind of cool, but when everything from Rolls-Royces to Elantras get murdered out, it just gets ridiculous. Also, Buckus is right, they are unsafe at any speed:

Almost rear-ended some asshat with blacked out taillights because I couldn't tell his brake lights were on.

8.) Clear Rear Lights

What looked good an a Lexus IS200 or a Mazda 6 wagon doesn't necessarily work on your Civic.

7.) Landau Roofs

On a car from the 1920s or '30s, they make sense. But never since.

5.) Chrome Fender Trim

It came from the eighties, and it should have stayed there. Don't get me started on fake portholes...

4.) Spinners

As a European, I thought these were still a thing in the 'States, but Raph told me they aren't anymore. I'm very happy for you.

3.) Roll Call

You are using a Snap-on wrench. Not just any wrench, but a Snap-on one. Wow! Also, I'm sure you don't.

2.) Underglow

Well, you could say that you're from Tokyo. Otherwise, just don't.

1.) Massive Race Wings

Need more downforce? Grab a burger and some liquidized sugar. It'll work better than this.
