I should have bought Rhino liner instead of a welder. Stupid me!

Thanks! I used cold rolled steel sheets ranging from 22 - 16 gauge. They were just scraps that the local metal supply had laying out in the lobby area. I bought probably in the neighborhood of 10 square feet, and have less than $40 into it. Scraps are the way to go! Read more
Hah yeah the welds aren’t too great looking, but even gross looking ones are stronger than rust! You bring up a good point which I didn’t mention, so thanks for point that out. The car battery and the ECU are both disconnected, which is critical as the car’s body becomes part of the welding circuit. Read more
Thank you! I’ve been tempted by old 900 Turbos but rust has always steered me away. Perhaps things will be different now... Read more
Thanks, that’s great advice. I actually bought some! I’m waiting until after I’ve finished spot painting the various areas, that way the greasiness of that stuff (if any leaks out) doesn’t interfere with paint adhesion. Read more
Thanks! The paint I’m using is called “weld-through primer” and it is basically a zinc-based paint that is conductive. It’s about the only rust prevention you can do when you weld up a patch panel that seals off a cavity in the body. Anything else has the potential ignite when welding heat is applied. Read more
I really wanted to go the used route, but I couldn’t find a good deal on one in the time frame that I needed it. In the end, I would have only saved at most $250 on the welder if I went the used route. There were many other accessories I had to buy which are included in the $950 figure. I figured I might as well start… Read more
I came very close to buying a rig from Harbor Freight, but knowing I can easily get parts and support for the Hobart, and all for less than the equivalent Vulcan, it was a no-brainer. The Handler 140 has been awesome for the sort of work I’m doing. Read more

Ah, but I have been kept awake at night about an underpowered sedan. Mainly due to nightmares about how much it’s probably going to cost me. Read more

I had the 885cc (T509) one, not the 995i. So that could have been the detracting factor on mine. The engine would get out of it’s own way, but never really had a rush of power at any point in the power band. Clutch basket issues (which were common I found out), wavering alternator output, all mixed up with a little… Read more

Thanks! Believe it or not, that is the one area of the car I haven’t had to do much to. Read more
The insulation is only on the couplings between HVAC ducts and really isn’t needed. This car was overbuilt in many ways (Japanese bubble era) and this is just one of the areas of the car that prove it. That foam was never going to last forever, and I reckon the car is better now that it is gone. Read more
