Continental Europe at the time, so they were a dime a dozen! I’ve just had a Google though, and it must have been a 106, because the 105 is apparently either a moped or a Peugeot from 1908... Read more

I’m actually waiting for a call that my new car is ready to pick up from the dealership... hopefully this week or next. It’ll be my first stickshift, so any additional pointers would be helpful! Read more

Please don’t doxx me.. I’ve owned both of those vehicles :p Read more

Taught myself to drive manual transmission after growing up in an automatic-only home when I bought my second car in 2007. After my 1999 Cavalier became more polybond then metal (which didn’t take long living next to the Atlantic Ocean and having roads thoroughly salted for at least 1/3 of the year) and being a broke

I learned to drive at 15 on an automatic. I didn’t learn manual til 28 when I purchased a FD3S RX7. That car drove for all of 3 days before it went to the shop for extensive repairs. In the meantime I was given a loaner - A miata with a manual. It was a joy to drive. I went a little crazy after that and started buying Read more

I first learned to drive standard in a 1968 Chevrolet half-ton as part of my summer job. “Three on the tree” is what they called it. It was 1980 and they asked me if I could drive a truck. I said yes. They didn’t ask me if I could drive standard. So when it came time to take the truck out I called over the mechanic... Read more

The worst thing I feel I’ve ever done is get a Q50 Redsport and not a manual anything. The car holds 4 very comfortable. has AWD, a 400(underrated) hp ttv6. Will do a 12.6sec quarter mile, great large brakes, handles nicely.... Read more

Really loving the podcast David, the stories are really good, but a story is only as good as the person who is telling it. You have done a fantastic job of making them compelling and worth hearing; this one was no different. Read more

When my youngest sister when to college my parents bought her a new Honda Civic with a 5 speed manual. She was one of the few that had a car and of course often she would have a friend ask if they borrow her car to go to the store or whatever. She would tell them that it was a stick shift and of course 9 out 10 would Read more

I learned on a ‘74 Mercury Comet with a 3 speed column shift and a grabby clutch. Everything after that has been a piece of cake. Read more

I learned on the family 1980 Volvo 240 wagon, 4 speed with push-button overdrive. I was bound and determined to come flying out of the gates, so I had developed passable clutch control by the time I was about 14, practicing in parking lots and the like. My parents were surprisingly lenient about it. Read more

Try this: you are 2 hours drive from home in a 70's Volkswagen beetle when the clutch cable (yes it’s a cable) snaps. From now on once you are stopped you have to leave the gear in neutral, push the car until it moves about 5mph, jump in, and force it into first gear without a clutch. Read more

My first experience driving a stick was a 1987 toyota camry 5-speed. It was my dad’s car, and he taught me how to drive stick in about 2 hours. We never went over about 20 mph, and we just shifted from first to second, accelerated, slowed down, back to first, complete stop....repeat. I was immediately hooked. Read more

About 7 years ago, my new girlfriend at the time had recently destroyed the engine in her Sebring sedan. She was adamant about learning manual before purchasing a new car. My only experience was with my fathers T5 mustang transmission but I figured we should rent a car and learn in that vs destroying a new car... Read more

Ask them how much experience they have driving a stick, then use your best judgement. I’ve sold older cars where I didn’t care that much and pristine newer cars where I wouldn’t let Lewis Hamilton test drive it. If they seem like serious buyers and seem like they know what they’re doing then I’m sure it’ll be fine. Read more

Listened to it this morning, and really enjoyed it. Very interesting hearing someone take their first few attempts at getting moving in a stickshift. Read more

Slightly off topic but I’m in the process of getting my 2014 Mazda 6 MT ready to be sold. I love the car and it’s really fun to drive I just need something more economical since I’ve currently got a ridiculous commute. Read more

Haha, no kidding. Thanks! I always wonder how many people in Denver/Colorado recognize “that blue rusty old car.” If I decide to rob any banks I’ll definitely have to borrow a vehicle. I do take it on a good number of trips around the state, perhaps inadvisably, and it is my daily driver so it’s always around Denver.
